Our garden is 9 years old now. As you said, gardening is always a work in progress, and our periwinkle and snow-in-summer (among others) definitely need serious "editing" every year. We live in BC where spring comes early, and we have learned to get started on our garden maintenance much sooner than when we lived in Ontario.

Hi Ruth Anne - welcome! Oh, a 9-year old garden can be a glorious one -- old enough for even trees to become more mature, shrubs to have grown into their fully natural shape and slow-growing perennials to be in their prime. But yes, some plants, especially spreading perennials (and of course, "mistake" plants) can become monsters! Don't worry about editing your spreaders and even taking pieces and moving them around. I have found snow-in-summer to be a light in much greener darkness, growing well in sunny sites, but periwinkle can be a real thug, throwing its' tentacles into the most innocent of neighbours lol! I am jealous of your move to BC, but you're right in that the weather there allows for all year gardening, and therefore all year maintenance! Thanks for your comment and talk to you again :c)
